“Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations” is the cautionary warning used to describe the propensity for family-owned businesses (FOB) to fail by the third generation. Unfortunately, the numbers give credence to the warning:

  • 70% of FOBs fail or are sold before the second generation takes over
  • Only 10% continue as active, privately held companies that successfully transition to the third generation
  • And only 16% of family businesses have a documented succession plan in place

Boston Globe, Family Businesses have no succession plan

Boomers will inherit approximately $750-billion over the next decade.

Wealth invites new considerations and new challenges. CIBC says there are currently about 2.5 million Canadians over the age of 75 with a total net worth of $900-billion or more and the beneficiaries will be mainly Canadians currently aged between 50 and 75 years.* Stewardship of family assets and inheritance requires an informed approach that also helps to maintain family harmony. We can help educate family members on the responsibilities and opportunities of significant wealth, and help manage expectations.

Family Governance

Family harmony should not be a casualty of significant wealth.

Family is never far from your thoughts or ours and family harmony should not be a casualty of significant wealth. Our experience guiding the next generation to effectively shoulder tomorrow’s financial responsibilities helps to relieve you of the burden of managing expectations and helps to ensure that your legacy is fulfilled.

Helping children communicate more effectively and achieve their potential

We continually build our network of experts to meet the evolving needs of affluent families. A new addition, and one that is proving invaluable to improve family communication and harmony, is a methodology that helps parents tap into each child’s unique way of communicating and behaviours. This methodology can help improve overall communication within the family and gives parents special tools to help guide their children to become aware of their talents, gain a better understanding of how to create their own solutions, kindle leadership skills and reduce stress.

Family Governance Whitepaper: Our FEA training helps bring guidance and expertise to professionalize governance and build understanding, awareness and preparedness with the next generation to create a pathway towards a successful transition. Click on the above link to access the Credit Suisse whitepaper which does an impressive job of highlighting many of the governance structures available and how they help professionalize and improve communication and trust.
